Hello Mike, please describe your pre-shot routine
Saturday December 3, 2011 6:57 Tom Tucker
6:59
Mike:
I look into the area where the target will appear, then I bring my gun up over the traphouse, keep my eyes still then call. I don't move until the target appears above the gun, then I look at it and shoot it.
Saturday December 3, 2011 6:59 Mike

[Comment From Steve WSteve W: ]
Hi Mike...how difficult is it for you to work on each & every target?
Saturday December 3, 2011 6:59 Steve W
7:00
Mike:
It is a battle and I try to remain calm so I don't narrow my vision, but you are right, you have to work on each target
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:00 Mike
7:01
[Comment From malcolm Rossmalcolm Ross: ]
Coach, what is a real routine for practice, not just blowing holes in the sky?
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:01 malcolm Ross
7:02
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:02
7:02
Mike:
I like to shoot the corner drills, 2 off the left corner, 2 off the right corner and 1 in the middle. I do this from each station, keep in mind you still look in the normal spot for each position (eye rotation)
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:02 Mike
7:03
[Comment From Steve WSteve W: ]
How much did you practice on your way up the ladder?
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:03 Steve W
7:05
Mike:
As much as I could, I gave up heavy practice in the winter months, too cold and too many close during the season, shooting 700 a weekend is enough for me. I can burn out if I practice too much
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:05 Mike
7:05
[Comment From malcolm Rossmalcolm Ross: ]
Mike, how does a New England shooter whose season is up after Westy Hogan in September, remain competitive when he starts shooting again in May?
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:05 malcolm Ross
7:06
iTrapshooter.com:
Mike won the longest shoot-off at Elysburg in 2005. The targets he shot were White Flyer's.
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:06 iTrapshooter.com
7:07
Mike:
I try to go south to a warmer climate, you still should work with the gun at home, lifting the gun both sides. I put dots on the wall and move my eyes from spot to spot
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:07 Mike
7:07
[Comment From Steve WSteve W: ]
I see a lot of bunker shooters mount their gun high, do a cheek weld (with mouth wide open) & come down to their hold v coming up.
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:07 Steve W
7:08
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:08
7:09
Mike:
Yes, I have seen that mount, remember we shoot a different target and rate of rise but if that works for you, do it. If you watch shooters, they have many different set-ups, there is no specific one that is correct
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:09 Mike
7:09
[Comment From HapHap: ]
Do you use your peripheral vision to acquire lead?
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:09 Hap
7:10
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:10
7:10
Mike:
No, I don't see a lead, when the gun gets there I shoot
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:10 Mike
7:11
[Comment From malcolm Rossmalcolm Ross: ]
Why do gun lifts on both sides?
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:11 malcolm Ross
7:11
Mike:
To strengthen both sides of my shoulders and arms
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:11 Mike
7:12
[Comment From Steve WSteve W: ]
How did you get K-80 to fit? Did you go custom & if so how does a gun fitter know what's best for you?
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:12 Steve W
7:12
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:12
7:13
Mike:
Great question, there are stock fitters and stock makers and to find one that does both is hard. Yes, I have a custom stock that has been made for me
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:13 Mike
7:15
iTrapshooter.com:
Mike, could you expand a bit more, as you said in the interview, about keeping focus and controlling the pressure. What words do you give to those you are coaching?
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:15 iTrapshooter.com
7:15
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:15
7:17
Mike:
I like to use the phrase "Look at the bird". I try to say that on each target. Breathing is very important. When we get pressured, we stop breathing. I really try to do that when I'm shooting
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:17 Mike
7:17
[Comment From Steve WSteve W: ]
I'm one eye w/tape, any specifics you recommend on look & hold+ POI in your coaching? My 27 Caps are giving me fits lately!
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:17 Steve W

[Comment From malcolm Rossmalcolm Ross: ]
Are there any exercises to increase visual acuity?
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:19 malcolm Ross
7:20
Mike:
I shot one eye for 18 years and decided to go two eyes. When I shot one-eyed, I held about a foot over the house, POI was 6 inches high
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:20 Mike
7:21
Mike:
I like the eye rotation drill
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:21 Mike
7:23
[Comment From malcolm Rossmalcolm Ross: ]
Do you mean corner drill or doubles eye rotation exercise or something else?
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:23 malcolm Ross
7:25
Mike:
Corner drill. I also like to stretch my eyes by looking left, right, up and down. Also drink a lot of water so that you stay hydrated
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:25 Mike

[Comment From malcolm Rossmalcolm Ross: ]
How important is keeping a journal and what should be in it?
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:25 malcolm Ross
7:26
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:26
7:27
Mike:
Very important, I keep notes on all the clubs I shoot at, where I hold, where I look, what banks I shot, stock settings, and if I shoot well I write down everything I felt I did right that day
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:27 Mike
7:28
[Comment From Steve WSteve W: ]

Saturday December 3, 2011 7:28 Steve W

At the 2011 Grand, your son,Jake, helped out in the trailer of a shooting simulator. Have you any experience with the same?
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:30 malcolm Ross
7:31
Mike:
Yes, Dryfire - he and I both tried it, very interesting
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:31 Mike

[Comment From Steve WSteve W: ]
Have you always been a K-gun shooter? How about loads- what
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:32 Steve W
7:35
Mike:
No, I have tried different guns; Kolar, Seitz Mod 12 Super X. But I have found that K gun has the best triggers and I have shot the gun very well over the years, and it is dependable

If you could change any rule in the ATA what would it be?
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:35 Steve W
7:36
iTrapshooter.com:
Let's take a quick poll...what one rule would everyone like to change?
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:36 iTrapshooter.com
7:36
Mike:
Can't think of one right now, maybe all shooters should know the rules!
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:36 Mike

[Comment From malcolm Rossmalcolm Ross: ]
Getting H coded can be awful

Saturday December 3, 2011 7:38 malcolm Ross

Same shells- 2 3/4 1/8 8
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:40 Mike

[Comment From TomTom: ]
As a new shooter with a singles average of 90, what should I be working on through the winter to bring that average up in the coming year?
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:40 Tom
7:42
Mike:
Tom, I would look at my equipment first. Check to make sure the stock fits you properly, pattern your gun to see where it shoots. Work with the gun, practice your mount
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:42 Mike
7:42
[Comment From Steve WSteve W: ]
Rule change = automatic reductions like any other major sport that relies what you did today v 5 years ago. Make earned yardage mean something & work to stay there.
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:42 Steve W
7:45
Mike:
If you want to shoot handicap, you have to shoot singles right first. If you can't break 95% at singles, how can you shoot caps!
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:45 Mike
7:47
[Comment From malcolm Rossmalcolm Ross: ]
Mike, thank you for your time,Merry Christmas, see you in May
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:47 malcolm Ross

Yes, Happy Holidays to all

Does hard blowing winds interfere with your scores much? Do you attack them under those circumstances any differently?
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:48 Hap
7:48
[Comment From TomTom: ]
Mike, Thanks for tips!! Merry Christmas to you and your family
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:48 Tom
7:49
Mike:
Wind effects my scores, but if I don't rush the target and just look at it, my gun will go where I look and I shoot better
Saturday December 3, 2011 7:49 Mike
